For fuck's sake, you are an economist. If you are doing focused advertising, what are the chances that someone in the vicinity of a Gordons tent is likely to be interested in Gordons as against a complete random sample of the population? And even if you aren't a habitual Gordons drinker the phone advertising will reinforce the advertising the mere existence of the tent provided. Particularly if you're some kind of cunt that thinks his phone is cool.

I didnt go in the Gordon's tent. I didnt go anywhere near it. Our conversation was about how Spaniards (i was in Bilbao) can think Gordon's a premium brand, in the same way that Italians drink Super Tenants on a night out.

happened to me last week
ask my son if he wanted a new PS4 controller for one of his xmas presents, haven't googled them or anything but next time I went on facebook there were the ads for ps4 controllers

As someone mentioned, it works via GPS and / or WiFi. Basically the Gordon's tent will pay google / apple to have a location or to communicate with every phones WiFi that picks up the signal.
They now know your device was in this location and therefore assume you are interested in the product in said location. You'll now receive adverts based on this.
You can disable the mic in your handset settings, you'll find that you will still see this type of advertisement pushed to your device.

You're surprised that your phone, and thus your operator and almost certainly Google and probably half a dozen other apps that you have forgotten to scroll through 6 pages to turn the GPS off, knows you've been in the Gordon's tent at a festival? Or at a particular address?
